Bloods, Crips, youthful ignorance and peer pressure.
‘Good Kid Maad City’ by Kendrick Lemar is an album about his eventful experiences that lead to his career of a rapper as a seventeen-year-old growing up in 2000s California. The compelling story curated some of his biggest hits like, ‘Money Trees’ and ‘Swimming Pools’. So that’s why I made a set of illustrations to celebrate the masterpiece of an album.
When creating my illustrations I paid homage to the culture of California by drawing with only blue and red, to represent the crips and bloods. In addition to the film imagery that I referenced, in some of the illustrations like ‘Boyz N the Hood’, ‘Colors’ and ‘Snowfall’. Each illustration represents either a song from the album or part of the story.
